Just two years prior to publication, the worst peacetime maritime disaster in Canada’s history struck one ship, when the ocean liner Empress of Ireland sank in the Gulf of St. This globally-significant project positions CP at the leading edge of decarbonizing the freight transportation sector. This map shows the system forty-five years after building commenced, in 1916, and was published in Chicago by the Poole Brothers. Though it was a promised component of the confederation, construction would not begin on the railroad for another decade following. A typical excursion is a 1,050 km (650 mi) route from Calgary through the Columbia River Valley and Crowsnest Pass, passing through Banff, Lake Louise and Kicking Horse Pass before returning to Calgary. Confederation was achieved in 1867, with British Columbia joining the new dominion territory in 1871. All trains are based out of Calgary, Alberta, and use a facility built at the Ogden Headquarters with all the heritage equipment on display. The idea had been around since the second half of the 19th century, when it was promoted as a way to unite the disparate British colonies of Canada, Nova Scotia, and New Brunswick. The Canadian Pacific (CP) Railway played a vital role in Canadian tourism in the early 1900s but, despite the fact that the train network in Canada still spans from coast to coast, it doesn’t get the attention it deserves travelers tend to drive or fly across the country, bypassing the old-world luxury and sustainability that traveling by rail affords. Connecting Halifax in Nova Scotia to Vancouver in British Columbia, the Canadian Pacific Railway was the country’s first railroad to operate from coast to coast. ![]()
